7 Reasons Why You'd Make a Tough Interior Design Client (and probably shouldn't hire a designer!)
Honest (maybe even a bit controversial) blog, but SO worth reading if you're considering hiring a designer!
So...If you find a designer who's a great fit for you — the beautiful result you'll receive, coupled with the LOADS of stress taken off your shoulders alone, will be life-changing. I'm not being dramatic here; it can absolutely be a fun process to work with a designer because we take away all the overwhelm and hold your hand throughout the process to ensure you're left with the very best spaces in alignment with your investment, lifestyle, and preferences!
BUT, it also takes two to tango — so if you're not ready for a pro designer or vice versa, you hire a designer that's not a good fit for you – the design sparkle WILL fade fast. So, what to do?
Do some digging. Research the designer you're interested in hiring, speak to them (and please don't ask them to consult or work for free! Always let your designer know your budget, and many times, they will try to provide you value at a service level that feels good to you). Next, look at their style and process. BUTTTT, also be honest with yourself — can you be a great client? And should you actually work with a designer?
You’re in a rush
If you're expecting beautiful, cozy, custom spaces instantly, you will %100 be disappointed. Thoughtful design takes rigorous planning and obsessively checking over many tiny details to pull together all the pieces of your unique puzzle. As pro designers, we have multiple organization, planning and design tools on the backend to ensure a stress-free experience for you (but you need to allow time for that process to flow! So, how do you go about designing a foyer that’s equally pretty as it is functional?
Your budget's totally off
If you're dreaming of a specific remodel, renovation or refresh, but don't have the budget for it, it will be difficult to achieve all your design goals. But, we will guide you on the most high-impact design decisions you can make that fits your budget (and how you can also potentially phase out your project while still feeling satisfied with every upgrade)!
You're all about copying the latest trend
Hiring us means having a pro design nerd create a design that's tailored to your lifestyle, budget + needs. So if you're looking to just replicate a look you saw on Instagram piece by piece, it will leave you with a copycat space that could have been sooo much more YOU (which in turn, takes away from our creativity and skillset). At that point, what's the point?
You need approval from your best friend, teenager, neighbor and mother-in-law
While input is valuable, too many outside opinions can derail your design. It's best to keep the design process between you, any key decision makers and your design team throughout the process. At the start of your project, we'll confirm who your key decision makers (KDMs) (so please tell us asap!) are and consistently communicate with your KDMs from the start to ensure we're all on same page.
You lack trust and ignore professional advice
Questioning every decision? Hired us but just want to do your own thing? This will cause tension and frustration between you and your designer. While we love and strive to provide a friendly, collaborative design atmosphere, you have hired us to professionally execute your design job! So we will make recommendations based on years of training/academia/professional experience. Please consider our position seriously!
You've got an inflexible vision
If you 100% already have a design in mind and only want us to agree with all your decisions, it doesn't make sense to hire us! Instead, be open (as we may surprise you with ideas you hadn't thought about before that will 100% make your life better)!
You can't follow directions
Whether it's reading an email, completing any tasks your designer gives you or showing up to an appointment on time — clear, timely + courteous communication is essential for a successful design outcome.
Hiring an interior designer can be a rewarding experience, but it requires collaboration, trust, and patience from both parties. By understanding and addressing potential challenges upfront, you can ensure a smooth and successful design journey that brings your dream space to life.
